turbulence: shimmering images, windy gusts, churning waters

turbulence: digital drawings that provoke curious musings.

We stared at shimmering images rising off the desert floor. . .

We played a round of golf, hitting the balls as far as possible, despite the fact that we were hampered by the gusts of wind blowing against us across the rough terrain, our hearts beating rapidly from the exertion . . .

We caught sight of a plane passing overhead flying unsteadily in the blustery weather. . .

Later we rested along the riverbank watching the water churning around the rocks. . .

And while considering this, we gazed at the smoke rising lazily from our cigarettes. . .

re-visions

RE-VISIONS is a series of digital drawings that examines, in 21st century terms and technologies, optical concerns and chromatic dissonances of mid-20th century Op Art.

Run through the hyper-dimensionality of Cyberspace, the RE-VISIONS images present illusions of movement and vibration, of hidden images and patterns, of warping and swelling, of the interaction of colors and layers, of alternating and repetitive forms.  They are generated by applying algorithms, wave patterns, and mathematical formulae to complex data sets based on topographic and cartographic imagery– these drawings are a re-visioning of mythic landscapes.

circle array

CIRCLE ARRAY is a series of cartographic fragments comprised of random patterning, where the hand-drawn spheres are visual equivalents or referents to models in software programs. These maps are concerned with the ambiguities and protean nature of representation.

badlands

BADLANDS:  images that began with my photographing in the mysterious and other-worldly Bisti Wilderness of Northwest New Mexico, where thousands of acres of bizarre geologic formations conceal deeply buried ancient histories. Intrigued by this enigmatic terrain, I became a visual storyteller of those hidden narratives, peeling back the surfaces through digital means, exposing parallel worlds beneath the seemingly impenetrable exteriors.

My artwork is an exploration of the unpredictability that occurs in landscapes of profound space and random patterning. In this mapping—whether of surface topography or of interiors of the body or of imaginary spaces—I employ various drawing and imaging techniques in a process of viewing, analyzing and re-presenting information, often referring to visual equivalents of software program models.

For the BADLANDS series I build up layers of photographic images of the actual location, interrupting their individual seamlessness with interventions (e.g., waveforms, sines, filters, and freehand drawing), and eliminate sections of the strata to reveal underlying segments. The resulting images are “revelations” of the imagined Bisti mysteries that lie beneath the surface of this extraordinary land.

the cold dark season of polar night

In the Land of Polar Night:  a series of photographs that I began recording in Finland. The images map the strangeness, the remoteness that makes Finland in deep Winter seem so Other, so unique. During this cold bleak season of polar night (which is Kaamos in Finnish) sharp delineations of night and day are replaced by tones of pitch black shading into deepest grays of semi-darkness and sometimes blending into dusky sunlight low on the horizon. Otherness reigns.

Extreme contrasts transform shapes and shadows of trees and rocks into eerie creatures. Expanses of frozen lakes and snowfields become mysterious terrains. Rarely-seen human figures isolated in the landscape take on the psychological and emotional tones of the darkness. In this land shrouded in shadow and obscurity one is aware of the ancient origins and animistic beliefs of the Finns.

Whether moving through the landscape by car or train, or hiking the cold, or looking intensely while standing still, I felt dominated by the power of Nature and the forces of the Strange while at the same time mesmerized by it all. These images are traces of the uncanny, of the Other—in the land of polar night.

Hot in the Badlands

Hot in the Badlands

Extreme heat enveloped me in an intense color shield as I crossed the wide expanse and approached the outcroppings.
